Engender was a roving collection of interactions aimed at exploring how we create, manufacture, consume, and perform gender binaries and stereotypes in design. Engender was performed live at Wanted Design in Soho and Industry City as part of the NYCxDesign 2015 festival. Under the direction of Professor Sinclair Smith, the SVA MFA Products of Design Program Class of 2016 created Engender as part of the Design Performance course. The students explored how designers are complicit in injecting gender into their work and then designed joyful interactions to confront and combat this narrative.
