VectorFlow Installation

NEW ORLEANS
2019

Role: Lead Welder

Designed by Cordula Roser Gray and Marcella Del Signore

Fabricated at Raven PMG

Collaboration with Lauren McAvoy

VectorFlow is a light-based interactive art installation at Duncan Plaza in New Orleans. The installation was designed by architects Cordula Roser Gray and Mercella Del Signore in partnership with the New Orleans Arts Council and the Downtown Development District.

The 5 abstract sculptures were fabricated using roller-bent steel angle iron, perforated steel sheets, and 3” diameter pipe. This project presented a unique challenge in which fabrication partner Lauren and I had to weld very thin and flimsy perforated metal to a significantly thicker steel frame without interfering with the dotted pattern. After successfully honing our welding machines for delicate yet structural tack welding, the sculptures were powdercoated red and lined with led string lights. The lights are controlled by an arduino board with sensors that track passerby’s walking patterns and translate them into a unique light show.
